Theory for the bending anisotropy of lipid membranes and tubule formation.
We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the bending rigidity of lipid membranes in two principal directions by a Landau mean-field theory. When the temperature is below the tilting temperature (T(c)), the coupling between molecular orientation and membrane local curvature square leads to an increase of the bending rigidity in the tilting direction and therefore a spontaneous symmetry brea...
متن کاملA guiding potential method for evaluating the bending rigidity of tensionless lipid membranes from molecular simulation.
A new method is proposed to estimate the bending rigidity of lipid membranes from molecular dynamics simulations. An external cylindrical guiding potential is used to impose a sinusoidal deformation to a planar membrane. The bending rigidity is obtained from the mean force acting on the cylinder by calibrating against a discretized Helfrich model that accounts for thermal fluctuations of the me...
متن کاملBiomechanical Properties of Insect Wings: The Stress Stiffening Effects on the Asymmetric Bending of the Allomyrina dichotoma Beetle's Hind Wing
Although the asymmetry in the upward and downward bending of insect wings is well known, the structural origin of this asymmetry is not yet clearly understood. Some researchers have suggested that based on experimental results, the bending asymmetry of insect wings appears to be a consequence of the camber inherent in the wings. Although an experimental approach can reveal this phenomenon, anot...
متن کاملExperimental evidence of the electrostatic contribution to membrane bending rigidity
– We have investigated the thermal fluctuations of giant unilamellar dimyristoylphosphatidlycholine vesicles in the presence of both non-ionic and ionic surfactants (peptides) with identical apolar chains. Using vesicle fluctuation analysis, the effects of ionic and non-ionic surfactants upon membrane bending rigidity in the case of no added salt have been determined and the electrostatic contr...
متن کاملExact Analytical Solution for Bending Analysis of Functionally Graded Annular Sector Plates
In this article, an exact levy solution is presented for bending analysis of a functionally graded (FG) annular sector plate. The governing equilibrium equations are obtained based on the classical plate theory. Introducing an analytical method for the first time, the three coupled governing equilibrium equations are replaced by an independent equation in term of transverse deflection. This equ...
